The Perfect Bra Size

Having the best bra doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t fit you properly. According to Sylvie Gaumond, bra expert at Montelle Intimates, the biggest mistake women make when choosing a bra is not knowing their true size. Can you imagine the shock of discovering that after years of wearing a 36C, you’re actually a 34D? No wonder we all complain about not getting the support we need. A well-fitted bra feels and looks better and will give any silhouette an extra boost.

Size Matters

To find the bra that best fits your body, the first step is knowing your bra size, which is based on two measurements: band size and cup size.

Band size refers to the measurement around your ribcage, under your breasts. Cup size is a bit more complicated. It represents the difference between your bust measurement and your ribcage.

Different brands calculate cup sizes differently, but to simplify, it’s the bust size (the measurement taken around the fullest part of the breasts, just above the nipples) minus the band size (the measurement around your ribcage). The difference in inches between the two is then charted to correspond to a cup size as below:

Getting the Right Fit
Back Band and Closure

When trying on a bra, make sure the band is straight across your back. Look in a mirror: the back should be parallel to the front. Otherwise, if it rides up, your breasts may sag due to a lack of support. Properly adjusting the band is extremely important because it is, after all, your main support.

Also, fasten the bra using the loosest hook. This way, as the fabric stretches over time and with use, you can tighten your bra, maintaining good support and fit.

Straps

Check that the straps are well adjusted: they should be firm on your shoulders without slipping or digging into the skin. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to slide a finger between the strap and your shoulder.

Cup Size

Move around to ensure that your breasts are comfortably settled in the cups and stay in place. Are there wrinkles in the fabric near the breasts? This is a sign that the cup size is too large. Try reducing the cup size or changing styles. Conversely, if your breasts overflow or spill out of the cups (the dreaded “double bubble”), you need to try a larger size. A bigger cup or a different style with more coverage will give your breasts the love and support they desperately seek.

According to Sylvie Gaumond, cup size can vary from one bra style to another. So don’t be surprised if you don’t wear the same cup size in your t-shirt bra as in your push-up bra. If a bra doesn’t feel or fit right, try going up or down a cup size. The band size, however, always stays the same. Decide on the type of bra you want (full coverage, seamless, wire-free, etc.) and then try the bra in different sizes.
